Two BCPS Teachers Honored with the Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educators Award

Congratulations to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Hannah Levitt and Lisa Schuurmans for being selected as two of the three winners of the 2025 Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educators Award. Presented by the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University, the award honors educators who make a meaningful impact on their schools and communities through Holocaust, genocide and human rights education.

Levitt, an educator with 14 years of experience, currently teaches Advanced Placement/Honors World History at McFatter Technical High School, where she also serves as Social Studies Chair and faculty advisor for the school’s Model United Nations team. “By learning about both the suffering and the resistance during the Holocaust, students develop empathy and are inspired to act with courage and responsibility,” Levitt said.

Schuurmans, an instructional facilitator with the District’s Secondary Learning Department, has 21 years of experience with BCPS. She is recognized for her deep commitment to justice, fairness and integrity in teaching. With a passion for learning, travel and helping students connect lessons of the past to the challenges of today, she has inspired countless students to carry empathy and understanding into the future. Reflecting on her teaching philosophy, Schuurmans shared, “Education is learning how to spot the signs of history repeating itself.”

Levitt and Schuurmans will be formally recognized during an awards ceremony in Boca Raton on October 30, 2025.
