Broward County Public Schools is proud to announce Walter C. Young Middle School is the winner of the 2022 P3 Eco-Challenge, earning a prize of $2,000 to further the schools’ environmental initiatives. The District congratulates all the nominees and winners who were celebrated and rewarded at an awards ceremony at the Long Key Nature Center in Davie.
The Broward P3 (Preserving Our Planet for Posterity) Eco-Challenge is a joint effort between the Broward County Public Schools, Broward County’s Natural Resources Division and the Environmental Conservation Organization of Broward County. Schools taking on the P3 Eco-Challenge must demonstrate participation in or implementation of different sustainability metrics based on a rubric composed of six comprehensive categories: School Grounds Enhancement, School Sustainability, Curriculum Integration, Community Involvement, Administrative Support and Innovation/Special Projects.
In addition to Walter C. Young Middle earning the top prize, the following schools won $500 grants: Central Park Elementary School, Challenger Elementary School, Dave Thomas Educational Center, Floranada Elementary School, Lauderdale Lakes Middle School, Miramar High School, Sawgrass Springs Middle School and Silver Shores Elementary School.
The P3 Eco-Challenge also includes Stewardship Recognition awards for top District teachers, students, non-instructional and custodial staff who promote civic responsibility, environmental stewardship and education of environmental issues. The educators honored this year are Jill Putney from Tradewinds Elementary School, Francisco Gonzalez from Silver Lakes Middle School, and Richard Lamarre from Miramar High School. The student winners are Alana Ojeda from Park Springs Elementary School, Khloe Bailey from Driftwood Middle School and Khushi Desai from Deerfield Beach High School. Jacqueline Sanchez from Griffin Elementary School won in the Non-Instructional Staff category and Dan Skula from Central Park Elementary School won the Custodial Category.
